Alberto Masala © 2014Sagra degli Agrumi (Citrus and Orange Fest), an important traditional festival, famous throughout Sardinia, it has become the symbol of Sarrabus. The festival, hosted in Muravera each year, will be held for the 43rd time next spring.
Originally named the “Citrus Folk Fair”, with the aim of promoting the various local production of citrus fruits, it has become an eagerly awaited event, which brings in thousands of visitors, including foreigners, thereby starting the summer tourist season.
The festival lasts three beginning on a Friday, and alternates between various events and activities that aim to raise awareness of the beautiful land, producers and local artisans. Typical old houses are decorated for the holiday, and used for exhibiting local cuisine, guided tours of the orchards and museums, conferences, workshops, sports events, photo contests and music events. The festival ends with a parade on Sunday, attended by a number of folk groups from all over Sardinia: the Knights, the typical Sardinian carnival masks, and the famous Etnotraccas -the main attraction of the parade; they depict scenes of agricultural, pastoral and domestic life, reconstructing Sarrabus’s traditional village life. The real stars, however, are the oranges, which are used for decorating the traccas, or as ingredients to various local recipes. You can buy them in many different stands.
